Java (1815); Warship; Frigate; Fourth rate; 52-60 guns

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary half block model of the Java (1815), a fourth rate 52 gun frigate. The hull is carved form a solid block of wood (?) and is painted a metallic bronze colour below the main wales separated by a thin white line along the waterline. The topsides are painted black, with the main gundeck highlighted by a creamy white horizontal band. The gunports are let into the hull and painted black whilst the forecastle and quarterdeck gunports are cut through the bulwarks (some restoration). The bow is fitted with head rails just aft of a half bust male figurehead. The stern is complete with carved galleries, painted black, below which is a rudder complete with gudgeons and pintles. The whole model is mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard which is painted a creamy white surrounded by a stained moulded edging. There is a detached plaque which is inscribed "143 Java 50-60, 1815 Built at Portsmouth as a "double banked" frigate with 60 guns in two complete tiers (as in No.144) though rated as 50 gun ship. Afterwards reduced to an actual armament of 52 guns. Dimensions: - Gun deck 171ft 11 1/2in Beam 43ft 6in". The number "(16)" is painted in white on the lower backboard edge amidships.
