Ship’s Boat (1826)
Scale: 1:24. A contemporary full hull block model of a ship’s boat (1826), with five painted thwarts and rigged to pull six single-banked oars. The model has been singed by the maker on the third thwart and a mast clamp is shown on the bow thwart where a single mast could be rigged for sailing.
The model was probably made to show the differences in design and construction as the starboard side of the hull is built in clinker fashion, that is planks that overlap, and the port side in carvel fashion where the planks are butted edge to edge. Each construction method had its advantages as the clinker hull was lighter and faster whereas the heavier carvel hulls were robust and could carry larger and heavier loads.
