Nimrod(1828); Warship; Sixth rate; Sloop; 20 guns

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of the 20-gun sloop ‘Nimrod’. Launched at Deptford in 1828 under the name ‘Andromeda’ it was soon renamed ‘Nimrod’ since there was already a frigate of that name, which had been built in Bombay.

Measuring 113 feet along the gun deck by 31 feet in the beam, she had an active career in the West Indies and Africa before becoming a coal hulk at Plymouth in 1853. She was eventually removed from the list in 1905.

The model was made on board the ‘Nimrod’ and given to Vice-Admiral Dacres, Commander-in-Chief on the Cape Station 1845–48, in memory of his son, James R. Dacres, who died at Mozambique in 1848 while in command of the ‘Nimrod’. The model was later bequeathed to Greenwich Hospital by Miss Dacres, the admiral’s daughter, in 1911.
