Adelaide or Queen Adelaide (1831)

Scale: 1:24. A contemporary full hull plank on frame model of the merchantman ‘Adelaide’ or ‘Queen Adelaide’ (1831). A large-scale and detailed model which is made from a variety of fruitwoods, with a number of fittings such as the capstan bars, belaying pins and pump handles carved from bone. The hull is complete with three stump masts, the foremast has capstan bars stowed vertically, and a central portion of the deck planking lifts away to reveal the interior construction and layout below.

Even though the model is inscribed with ‘Adelaide’ on the stern and ‘Queen Adelaide’ on the bow, the only vessel it would appear to represent was a ship built in Nova Scotia in 1831 and registered in Liverpool, although it was much longer ship. The model was probably made for exhibition and represents a ship measuring 106 feet in length by 29 feet in the beam. The model is mounted on its original walnut veneered baseboard and has a brass plaque inscribed “This model is the workmanship of Christopher Hayes Junior, Shipwright Liverpool, Presented March 4th 1831”.
