Fighting vessel (1831); Service vessel; Gunboat; Danish
Scale: 1:24. A contemporary full hull model of a Danish gunboat (1831). The lower part of the hull is carved from a solid block of wood to which are pinned and glued the raised gunwales, decking and seating. It is also complete with a rudder and a single 60-pounder gun on its carriage mounted on a slide in a well at the stern.
The Danish gunboats of 1808 were copies of a Swedish design of 1775 by Fredrik Chapman. Two new classes were introduced in 1831 by Chief Constructor Schifter, the first having almost the same dimensions as the older boats and the second, as represented by this model, being a good deal smaller. Measuring 50 feet in length by nearly 12 feet in the beam, they were rigged with two lugs and a foresail.
