Service vessel; Brigantine; Yacht
Scale 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of a brigantine (1833). Model is decked, fully equipped and rigged with full suit of sails set. It is complete with canon mounted on carriages, anchors, and a cutter rigged on quarter davits. At this scale it represents a vessel measuring 91 feet along the gun deck by 26 feet in the beam.
Although the date is by no means certain, it resembles a design that would pre-date ships designed by Sir William Symonds, especially in relation to the shape of the bow and stern. The rake of the masts is somewhat exaggerated but clearly illustrates how powerful and fast these vessels were. This model is believed to represent a ship that was used as a yacht by the Commander-in-Chief of the China Station during the 1840’s.
