Warship; 98-guns

Scale: 1:96. A contemporary full hull model of a proposed 98-gun two-decker ship of the line (circa 1840). The model has been carved in the solid and gauged out internally, and mounted on wooden keel blocks on an original baseboard. It illustrates the typical features of the large sailing warships at the beginning of the 19th century and has solid bulwarks, round bow and an early form of elliptical stern. It was proposed at a time when the navy was either converting their large warships to steam or building new. It would suggest that they were trying to accommodate almost the same amount of guns carried by a three-decker on only two decks.
