Scale: Unknown. A model of HMS Modeste (1837), an 18 gun sixth rate sloop made entirely in wood which has been painted in realistic colours. The hull is painted copper below the waterline and black above with an off-white stripe running the entire length of the gun ports. The inner faces of the gun ports are painted red, the inside bulwarks are painted green, and the decks are light brown. The female figurehead is gilded and there are a pair of catheads at the bow. There is a short forecastle and a single main deck. The model is mounted on two rectangular wooden crutches on a rectangular baseboard with bevelled edges and bun feet. On base of model: 'No.105' and there is a plaque inscribed: 'H.M.S. Modeste Guns 18 Tons 568 Built 1837'. A label reads '105 The Modeste 18 guns (on a 1/4in scale) Length 120ft Breadth 33ft 2 1/2in Depth 14ft 2in, Tonnage 568 Laid down at Woolwich Yard in 1837 Launched in 1837 Designed by Admiral the Hon George Elliot The armament was as follows: Description upper deck No.18 Prs.32 Her complement of men was 145'.
