Rossia(1839); Warship; Russian; First rate; 128 guns

Scale: 1:96. A contemporary full hull model of the Russian 128-gun three-decker ‘Rossia’ (1839). The hull is complete with a minimal number of fittings including stump masts, channels, figurehead and stern decoration. It depicts the ship lifted on ‘camels’, which were longitudinal shaped floating pontoons joined together to form a floating dock. In Amsterdam, the Dutch developed the original idea of camels, and it was almost certainly borrowed and developed by the Russian Navy to transport the large warships built at St Petersburg over the shallow areas in the estuary of the river Neva.

Both the measurements and number of gun ports make identification of this model certain as the ‘Rossia’ and no other ship. It was present at Sveaborg when that fortress was bombarded by the Anglo-French fleet in 1855, and was hit several times having 11 men killed and 79 wounded. The ‘Rossia’ was eventually broken up in 1860.
