Warship; Second rate; 80 Guns
Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of an 80-gun two-decker ship of the line (1840). The model is decked and complete with stump masts and bowsprit, together with a number of deck fittings, the whole of which is mounted on its original baseboard. The model was formally recorded as the ‘Cumberland’ a 70-gun ship of 1842, but both its measurements and gun port configuration are far too great for that ship; while the figurehead suggests a connection with Nelson, and the word ‘Nile’, but there is no suitable ship with either name.
However, the dimensions are very close to that of the ‘Brunswick’ an 84-gun ship built in the 1840s. Although none of that class has an obvious ‘Nelson’ or ‘Nile’ association, there was the ‘Aboukir’ a 90-gun ship that was launched as screw vessel in 1848. The dimensions of the ship from the model are a gun deck length of 140 feet by 55 feet in the beam.
