Service vessel(1840); Lifeboat; Double-ended
Scale: 1:12. A contemporary full hull model of a double-ended, non self-righting lifeboat circa 1840, built plank on frame in clinker fashion. The hatched gratings are removable and reveal the drainage holes in the middle section of the hull where the water ballast is used for additional stability. As well as the two air cases at the bow and stern, the buoyancy is increased by two metal cylinders fixed to bulkheads across the floors. The model is complete with a lead keel which would indicate that it was made as a working model. Label reads ‘Lifeboat with holes in bottom, and air pipes under the flats, of the form generally given to a whale-boat, with raking system, and a leaden keel. 1840. Would not self-right if upset. Name of inventor unknown’ and ‘1869 Cat.No.111 No.53. 1913 Cat f.101 Case 3. No 1’.
