HMS Retribution (1844); Warship; Frigate; 10 gunsPage

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary half block model of HMS Retribution (1844), a 10 gun paddle frigate. The hull is carved from a solid block of wood(?) and painted a metallic bronze colour below the waterline with black topsides above, separated by a thin white line. The clipper-shaped bow is fitted with headrails and a small half bust figurehead, painted gold, whilst the flush main deck runs the full length of the hull and finishes above a small square stern with a carved galleries and a rudder below. Amidships is a large paddle wheel box supported by sponsons on either side (some modern replacements). Above deck the paddle box is fitted with an upturned 'paddle box boat', all of which is painted a creamy white colour. Either side of where the sponsons run into the hull are ten gunports let into the hull and painted a light grey. The whole model is mounted on a rectangular wooden backboard painted a creamy white colour and surrounded by a stained wooden moulded edging, on which is painted "(43)" amidships under the keel. There is a small plaque on the backboard which is inscribed 'The "Retribution," 10 guns, 1641 tons. Built at Chatham yard 1844'.
