Flying Fish (1844); Fighting vessel; Brig; Third class; 12 guns
Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of the third-class brig ‘Flying Fish’ (1844) mounted on its original wooden baseboard by two keel blocks. The upper works are painted black with copper sheathing below the waterline, and a cream coloured wooden deck.
Originally designed by Sir William Symonds, the Chief Surveyor of the Navy, these vessels were a class of two; the other was named ‘Kingfisher’. Measuring 103 feet in length by 81 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 444, the ‘Flying Fish’ was launched at Pembroke Dock in 1844. Her armament consisted of twelve 32-pounder guns and required a crew of 130 men. After a fairly uneventful career, the ‘Flying Fish’ was paid off in 1851 and eventually broken up at Portsmouth in 1852.
