Service vessel(1849); Lifeboat; Paddle wheel
Scale: circa 1:12. A contemporary full hull design model of a hand operated paddle-wheel lifeboat. The double-ended hull is constructed in carvel fashion, edge to edge planking, and is complete with a sponson supporting four paddle boxes. It is steered by a tiller and rudder, as well as having the option of a large steering oar through a rollock over the stern, with access for the coxswain through a large square hatch. At either end are circular access hatches for the crew to use during operation whilst the larger hatch covers between the paddle boxes slide longitudinally to give access for survivors scrambling up the hull using the wooden horizontal toe rails. The totally enclosed deck provides protection for both the crew and survivors against the elements and is fitted with four quarter bollards for towing. The designer of this vessel is unknown but the technological features and patina of the model would suggest a date of mid-to late 19th century.
