HMS Tribune (1853); Warship; Frigate; Screw; 31 guns

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of the screw-frigate ‘Tribune’ (1853). This model illustrates the transition from sail to steam with the three stump masts indicating the square sailing rig, and the funnel and stern frame aft for a propeller for use under steam. There is also an early form of bridge deck just above the steering wheel located just forward of the mizzen mast. The whole model is mounted on its original pillars on a wooden baseboard.

The ‘Tribune’ was built at Sheerness dockyard and measured 192 feet along the gun deck by 55 feet in the beam and had a displacement of 1569 tons. It was armed with thirty 32-pounder guns on the main and quarter decks and carried a crew of 300 men. It served in the Black Sea fleet in 1854 and took part in the bombardment of Sebastopol. Later ‘Tribune’ was stationed in Chinese waters and the Pacific before eventually being sold for breaking to Marshall of Plymouth in 1866.
