'Great Britain (1854)'; Merchant vessel; Cargo vessel; Three-masted ship
Scale: 1:96. A contemporary full hull model of the sailing ship ‘Great Britain’ (1854), fully rigged and mounted on wooden crutches. It includes a set of boats, two rigged from the quarter davits, as well as a variety of deck fittings and deckhouse accommodation. Although the model has been made by an amateur, possibly a sailor, the quality and detail is of a very high standard and portrays the design and layout of the clipper ship of the mid-1850s.
There is a vessel of this name listed in Lloyds Register that was built in Sunderland in 1854 and the model would appear to fit its known dimensions of 136 feet in length by 28 feet in the beam and tonnage of 514 gross. It was registered in London and owned by Douglas & Co., and traded to North America. However, this vessel was rigged as a barque where as this model is ship-rigged.
