Warship; Armoured coastal defence ship

Scale: 1:96. A contemporary full hull model of a proposed armoured coastal defence ship (1859) mounted in its original wooden glazed display case. The model illustrates the development and design of the powered armoured warships for this period and shows a hull fitted with three screws, on which is an armoured citadel with four heavy guns operating inside. It was designed by Captain E. Wilson, RN, and measured 190 feet in length by 55 feet in the beam. It also shows how the main deck was cleared of any obstructions so as not to interfere with the arc of fire, by mounting the deck and lifeboats on raised pillars and davits.
