HMS Achilles(1863); Warship; Ironclad; Battleship
Scale: 1:48. A contemporary waterline model of the ironclad battleship HMS 'Achilles’ (1863) mounted on its original wooden baseboard. It is fully rigged on all five masts and since the model is lacking some deck detail, this model was probably made to illustrate the layout of the rig in relation to the now larger and stronger hulls being built. There is a short forecastle deck in the bow with a flying bridge and conning or pilothouse mounted centrally aft of the foremast.
The ‘Achilles’ was very similar to the ‘Warrior’ but had a complete waterline of belt armour. She was also the first iron-hulled warship to be built in a Royal Dockyard. After having her sailing rig reduced to three masts, she remained in sea-going service until 1885. In 1901 she became a depot ship at Malta, and later in 1913 she was moved to Sheerness to become part of the torpedo school. The ‘Achilles’ was finally broken up in 1923.
