HMS Lord Warden (1865); Warship; Battleship
Scale: 1:48. A half block model of HMS Lord Warden (1865), a wooden ironclad battleship. The model is made entirely in wood, constructed in bread and butter fashion and gouged out internally. The hull is painted a coppery-brown below the waterline with the upperworks and bulwarks painted black, and divided by a thin white line along the waterline. There is an additional horizontal line painted red below the waterline possibly to indicate the lower extent of the iron cladding on the hull. There are a number of features carved and fitted to the black part of the hull including portholes, loading doors, apertures, 26 gunports (some with lids), three sets of channels complete with chain plated deadeyes, a pair of anchor handling davits at the bow, a large rectangular block of heads and a drainage pipe. There is a rudder with its fittings fitted to the stern frame which is complete with an aperture for the screw propeller (not fitted). The bow is fitted with a very shallow ram below the waterline whilst above there are a pair of hawsepipes painted red internally which are situated just below a decorative shield figurehead on which is painted the Union Jack. There is a single deck together with the forecastle finished in natural wood and varnished with the individual planks scored and marked in with black ink. The hull is fitted with three stump masts and a bowsprit finished in natural wood and varnished together with a pair of either truncated or telescopic funnels painted black. Other fixtures and fittings include a pair of capstans, pinrail bits, steam pipes and six patches with wooden gratings. There is also provision for stowage for hammocks (not fitted) along the top of the bulwarks.
The model is mounted on a wooden backboard painted a creamy-white, with a stained and varnished mahogany edging. The model has been recently restored with the additions and repairs finished in a natural wood colour.
