Warship

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of an iron-cased warship as proposed by the shipbuilders Samuda Brothers, London, in 1867. The model illustrates the use of heavy guns mounted inside circular turrets or cupolas on a hull powered by twin screws. At this scale the model represents a ship measuring 312 feet in length by 52 feet in the beam, and according to the inscription on the baseboard, a burthen tonnage of 3590 with engines of 800 horsepower.

Although it is fitted with twin screws, the presence of the stump masts and bowsprit indicate that the development of the steam engine was such that it still required a full sailing rig as the main propulsion. The model also shows how the bulwarks on the hull were hinged so as not to impede the arc of fire from the guns. During the 19th century, it was common practice for the navy to invite UK shipyards to submit designs for warships; the format would be scaled plans together with a model.
