Fighting vessel; Gunboat

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of a proposed iron gunboat (1868) fitted with a single gun in an armoured turret. The model is carved from a solid block, carved out internally and partially decked. The roof of the armoured turret lifts away to reveal the layout and operation of the gun (missing). Because the gun is in a fixed position and can only fire over the bow, the hull is double-ended and fitted with a single screw and rudder at each end to allow quick and accurate manoeuvrability. This design was proposed by Messrs Maudslay, Sons and Field and measured 150 feet in length by 21 feet in the beam. It is not known as to whether it was actually built.
