Republic (1869); Merchant vessel; Cargo vessel; Three-masted ship

Scale: 1:100. A full hull exhibition-style model of the American cargo ship ‘Republic’ (1869) mounted on a plaster sea base showing the vessel under full sail in a gale. The model is fully rigged and equipped, including scale figures on deck and on the mizzen course yard furling the sail. Even though the model is rigged with all of the fair weather sails flying, including stunsails, this would have been impossible given the state of the sea. However, the sails themselves have been nicely modelled and show the individually stitched cloths together with their running rigging. It is complete with its original display case with the inscription ‘Model of the “Ozeanrenner” Van Hans Craemer Munchen Jagerstrasse 5/1 Schiff: Teeclipper “Republic” Etwo 1860 Situation: Nacheinem Gewifterstrurm’.

The ‘Republic’ was built at Kennebunkport, Maine, for Boston owners and measured 193 feet in length by 39 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 1297 gross. Damaged by collision in 1889 she was sold to Chilean owners and remained under that flag until 1898, when she was sold in Sydney to British owners. By this time, she was unseaworthy and became a coal hulk in Melbourne under the name of ‘Geographe’, before finally being broken up in 1930.
