HMS Devastation (1871); Warship; Battleship; Turret ship

Scale: 1:48. A half block model of the port side of the battleship HMS Devastation (1871), made entirely in wood and painted dark brown below the waterline, a narrow white stripe above and black above the waterline. Hull details include a ram bow, rudder and port side propeller shaft casing. Other fittings and details include a single row of portholes along the bulwarks; superstructure placed amidships with cavetto profile and two entry ports; two large-diameter gun turrets placed fore and aft the superstructure, each with provision for two guns whose openings are painted red; stump mast; and two stump funnels (currently missing). The model is displayed on a backboard painted off-white with a mahogany-stained frame. On accompanying typewritten plaque ‘280 Devastation - battleship - 1871. High-freeboard, seagoing turret ship. The first British battleship without masts and sails. Built at Portsmouth. Rearmed and re-engined in 1891-3. Sold in 1908. First rearmament: - 4 12-in (35 ton) M.L. Later armament: - 4 10-in (29 ton) B.L. Dimensions: - Length 285ft. Beam 62ft. 3 in. Displacement 9330 tons. Speed 13 1/2 knots’.
