Vasco da Gama (1876); Warship; Monitor; Coastal defence monitor

Scale: 1:48. A half block model of the starboard side of the Portuguese coastal defence monitor Vasco da Gama (1876) made entirely in wood with metal fittings and painted in realistic colours. The hull is painted tan brown below the waterline, black above. Fittings include a ram bow; decorative bow and stern; starboard bilge keel; starboard propeller and propeller shaft housing; forecastle and poop deck, both encircled by guard rails; three sided bulwark accommodating the central battery with gun ports facing fore and aft; single row of intermittent gunports along the starboard quarter; stump fore, main and mizzen masts; stump funnel, painted black; and rudder. The model is displayed on a rectangular backboard, painted light blue-grey within a narrow wooden frame. Hand-rendered on backboard ‘ "Vasco de Gama" an iron armour plated vessel of war of 1500 tons & 3200 horse power for the Portuguese Gov MT.', 'Armoured 2-18 tons guns, 1-6 1/2 Do Do, 4-20 Pdrs, Armour 9" & 10".' 'Dimensions Length - 200'-0", Breadth - 40'-0", Depth - 25'-0", Dispmt. 2479 tons.' and 'Built by the Thames Iron Works and Shipbuilding Company, Blackwall, London. 1876’.
