Emma Jane (fl.1880); Cargo vessel; Brig

Scale: unknown. A contemporary sailor-made scenic model of a late-19th-century cargo brig (1880), mounted on a painted clay or putty sea base, the whole of which is enclosed in its original wooden glazed display case. The model has been left unvarnished and unpainted together with its rigging. It is flying a red ensign and a name pennant from the top of the masts, and the name ‘Emma Jane’ is inscribed on the underside of the base in pencil. The sails and yards have been carved from a single piece of wood and bone has been used for the crosstrees, mast tops and bowsprit collar. The figurehead is a generic bird, which has been either finished in gold paint or gilded.

These models were made in fairly large numbers by seaman both at sea or when ashore on leave. They were often made as gifts to family members or commissioned by other individuals and it is common to find that any names, either inscribed on the model or associated with it, may be fictitious and often were connected with a family relative. The date of this model has determined by the configuration of the rig and the rounded whaleback bulwarks on the poop deck.
