Monarch (1881); Service vessel; Cable repair ship

Scale: 1:72. A contemporary full hull model of the cable repair ship ‘Monarch’ (1881) mounted in a scenic dry dock baseboard. It is fully rigged and complete with a variety of equipment needed to both retrieve and carry out the repair of submarine cables. The hull is fitted with large sheaves at the bow and stern and illustrates how the cables are worked on deck as well as how and where they are stowed below in the hold. The model was designed and built by Mr W. R. Culley of the Post Office Submarine Department in 1881, and represents a ship measuring 220 feet in length by 32 feet in the beam.

The name ‘Monarch’ appears on the stern, and there was actually a vessel of this name but built for the Post Office Telegraph Department in 1883. However, this ship was screw driven, not paddle as shown by this model, and was 20 feet longer.
