Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull of the 'Albatross' (1884), a powered general cargo ship. The model is built in the builder’s style and is decked, fully equipped and depicts the ship as launched fully rigged. It was built by Palmers Shipbuilding & Iron Co. Ltd., Jarrow-on-Tyne, and measured 250 feet in length by 37 feet in the beam with a tonnage of 1450 gross. It was powered by a two-cylinder compound steam engine of 184 initial horsepower turning a single propeller, producing a service speed of 111-112 knots.
The ‘Albatross’ was owned by the General Steam Navigation Company and mainly employed in the coastal and continental trade. The deck cranes just forward and aft of the masts, were suited to rapid loading and unloading of lightweight cargoes at small ports. She remained in service until 1924.
