Clive (1884); Passenger vessel; Service vessel; Tug

Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull builder’s model of the passenger steamer and tug ‘Clive’ (1884) mounted on turned pillars in its original wooden glazed display case. The hull is built in ‘bread and butter’ construction as can be seen on the varnished lower hull, whilst the topsides are finished in black with wooden gunwale cappings. On deck, most of the fittings are in solid wooden block form with details such as doors and cabin windows drawn on in black ink. There are four large wooden bollards in two pairs amidships on either side and towards the stern, which were used for towing and coming alongside. The wooden plaque pinned to the baseboard is inscribed ‘Twin screw steamer “Clive” 192.05 x 14.0 x 30.2 577.08 G.R & 230 N.H.P Port Glasgow. 1884’.

The ‘Clive’ was built by R. Duncan & Co. for J. Wyllie & Co. in 1884 and carried out both passenger and towage duties along the River Clyde and out into the estuary. The twin screw propulsion and long square mid-section made it a very versatile vessel for the range of jobs needed on the River Clyde ranging from assisting the newly launched ships to the fitting out berths to transporting passengers. In 1900, the ‘Clive’ was sold to Lim Cheng Tail and registered at Rangoon under the British registry. It was not listed in Lloyd’s Register after 1906.
