Four Winds (1885); Cargo vessel
Scale: 1:48. A half block model of the Four Winds (1885) made largely of wood with metal fittings. The underwater hull is finished in natural varnished wood with black topsides above the waterline to deck level. The clipper shaped bow is complete with a carved wooden female figurehead with wings followed by a decorative trailboard. The hull is inscribed with two sets of draught marks, the ship's name at the bow and the plimsoll mark amidships. There is a carved wooden decoration around the rounded counter stern. At the bow there is a short forecastle deck fitted with a single capstan and a set of bollards, all of which are surrounded by a raised guardrail on stanchions. The main deck is fitted with three stump masts, and a large rectangular deckhouse alongside which is fitted a double ended lifeboat painted white externally and blue internally and mounted on skids with a pair of davits. Between the main and mizzen mast is a raised boat deck fitted with a single transom sterned lifeboat painted white on the exterior and blue on the inside, as well as a pair of davits on the outboard side. The poop deck is fitted with a single ship's wheel mounted on a rectangular steering box. Fitted just forward of the wheel are a pair of raised and rounded skylights, one of which doubles up as a companionway. There is a single pair of bollards on the deck which is surrounded by a guardrail mounted on stanchions finished with a wooden capping. There is a paper label to the right of the bow inscribed: 'Palmers No.544 Shipbuilding & Iron Company Ltd 1885 Jarrow-on-Tyne'. The wooden backboard is inscribed: 'S. "Fourwinds", Dimensions 267' x 39' -2" x 25' - 4"'. The whole model is mounted in a glazed mahogany display case.
