Renown (1886); Cargo vessel; Barge; Sailing barge; Stumpie

Scale 1:32. A contemporary full hull model of the 'Renown' (1886), a ‘stumpie’ sailing barge. Built plank on frame, the model is decked, fully equipped and rigged, with sails set. The hull is inscribed with ‘Renown’ on port and starboard bows, and ‘Renown Rochester’ on stern and lifebelt.

The ‘Renown was built at Halling on the Medway, 1886, and was a hard chine barge rigged as a ‘stumpie’, i.e., without a topmast. Owned by William Lee and Sons, she spent most of her long and active life trading the Thames and Medway carrying cement and lime. The absence of a tall topmast, although reducing the effective sail area, simplified the handling of lowering the rig when cargoes were delivered above the London bridges.

This model was built for William Lee and Son Hailing, Kent, in 1886 and is distinguished by the rampant white horse ‘Invicta’ of Kent on the sails.
