Roddam (1887); Service vessel; Cable repair ship
Scale: unknown. A contemporary sailor-made, full hull model of the cable repair ship ‘Roddam’ (1887), mounted on its original wooden crutches. The hull has been carved from a solid piece of wood and is complete with a multitude of fixtures and equipment needed to locate and repair telegraphic cable. In order to work the large marker and floatation buoys, the two masts are rigged with large and heavy-duty cargo davits. On the bow is a range of the various grapnels, which would be used for snagging the cable and lifting it from the seabed. This vessel was also fitted with a triple sheave on the bow as well as single over the stern, both of which were used in paying out and retrieving the cables, which were either being laid or repaired.
Details about the ‘Roddam’ are scant although there was a vessel registered in London and working during the late 1880s but the dimensions do not agree with the model.
