Service vessel; Lifeboat

Design full hull model of a 'Lovold' patent lifeboat (1887), built to a scale of 1:24. On the model, which is decked and equipped, is a plaque inscribed ‘Clover Clayton & Co Lovold's Patent No 15462 Nov 12 1887 Builders Liverpool’.

John Lovold, a master mariner, built this model to accompany a patent application for his deck-seat lifeboat. If a ship sank, the (upturned) deck-seat would float off, and the ballast in the top part of the seat would turn it over converting it to a lifeboat. It is fitted with four hinged washstrakes (extra planks) to provide better protection for the survivors as well as increasing the buoyancy and stability of the hull. Internally, it is fitted with sealed buoyancy tanks, thwarts and four oars, which were rowed through rowlocks cut out in the washstrake along the sides.
