Elginshire (1891); Cargo vessel

Scale: 1:48. A half block model of Elginshire (1891), a powered general cargo ship made largely of wood with silver plated, gun metal fittings. The hull, which is made in bread and butter fashion, is finished in a light varnished wood below the waterline with a darker wood above to the topsides finishing at a bulwark with a wooden capping, below which are 25 circular port holes. The hull is decked for its entire length with individual planks lined in black ink. At the foredeck are a variety of fittings including an anchor, a rigged davit, a windlass, mooring bollards, fairleads, ventilator cowlings, and a cargo winch, all of which are silver plated. Either side of the foremast are two rectangular cargo hatches complete with a pair of cargo winches and a single navigation lantern. The whole deck is surrounded by a guardrail with stanchions. The main deck is complete with two stump masts finished in natural varnished wood. The superstructure on deck comprises of the bridge accommodation and chart house on which is mounted a steering wheel and binnacle, fire buckets, and a double ended lifeboat mounted on chocks and rigged on a pair of davits. Just aft of the bridge is a much larger accommodation block complete with a single funnel which has been cut down, four ventilation cowlings, and two lifeboats with square transoms mounted on chocks and rigged on davits. Either side of the mizzen mast are two rectangular cargo hatches with their boards marked in black ink and a pair of cargo winches. At the stern is a large double wheel mounted in a rectangular steering box on which is inscribed: 'Elginshire'. Below the rounded counter stern is a single rudder with fittings marked in black ink and a metal propeller. The name: 'Elginshire' is inscribed on the starboard bow and stern. The whole model is mounted to a wooden backboard which is inscribed: 'SS Elginshire 364' x 48 x 27, 9 DM. 5365 Tons DW Built by CS Swan Hunter, Wallsend on Tyne' and is displayed in a glazed mahogany case.
