Lightening (1891); Passenger/cargo vessel

Scale: 1:48. A shipbuilders half block model of Lightening (1891), made in wood with metal fittings. The hull is painted pink below the waterline with the upper hull finished in black with details such as stanchion rails, portholes and scuttle ports painted in white. The forecastle, bridge deck and quarter deck are painted a light brown colour with the individual planks inked on in black, whilst the main deck below is finished in a light brown colour. The bow is clipper shaped and is fitted with a female figurehead, in robes, painted white overall with gold highlights. Fixtures and fittings include: an anchor, navigation light, ventilator cowlings, two stump masts, four lifeboats painted white and rigged in davits and a single truncated funnel painted black. At the stern there is a double wheel mounted foreward of the steering box on which is inscribed the ship's name. Below, a four-bladed propeller and stern frame is marked on the hull in black ink. The model is mounted on a blue, textile covered backboard and base within a glazed mahogany display case which is supported along its length by four ornately carved wooden brackets.
