Itaipu (1892); Itaoca (1892); Passenger/cargo vessel

Scale: 1:48. A half block model representing the Itaoca and Itaipu (both 1892) made largely of wood with metal fittings finished in gun metal and silver plate. The hull is painted pink below the waterline with black topsides above to the deck level. On the bow is the name: Itaoca and running the length of the hull are 37 circular portholes. There is a carved rope decoration around the counter stern with a set of draught marks below just forward of a single rudder and a three-bladed propeller. All of the deck planking is lined in black ink and finished in a creamy white. There is a raised forecastle deck fitted with a large hand operated anchor windlass, bollards, fairleads, and a small ventilation cowling painted silver. There is a guardrail mounted on silver plated stanchions which runs the entire length of the hull and also surrounds the bridge deck. The guardrail has a wooden capping aft of the bridge. The main deck is fitted with a number of different sized ventilator cowlings painted silver, two cargo hatches and a pair of steam winches either side of the foremast. There is a raised bridge deck on which is mounted a charthouse, a binnacle, an engine telegraph, and three large ventilator cowlings painted silver with red hoods internally. There are three boats painted white externally with varnished natural wood internally. The forward two are double ended whilst the aft boat has a square transom stern. They are all rigged from silver plated davits. Just aft of the bridge superstructure is a large rectangular deckhouse where the panels, windows, and doors are lined in black ink and the windows are painted in blue. Aft of the mizzen mast is a large steam powered winch, an engine room skylight, two rectangular skylights with seating either side, four ventilator cowlings painted silver, and a large sloping hatched companionway with seating either side. There is a large steering wheel mounted on a rectangular steering box with raised gratings either side and a single binnacle just forward of the steering position. The whole model is mounted on a rear silver mirror which is surrounded by a black frame with a gold moulding line. The base of the case is complete with a royal blue felt covering on which is mounted a carved ivory plaque inscribed: 'Model of TSS "Itaoca & Itaipu". Designed and constructed by James & George Thomson Ltd Clydebank. NB to order of James Angus & Co. London 1891'. The whole model is mounted in a glazed mahogany display case with a pair of decorative turned columns with gold highlights and four turned bun feet. Stamped on the lefthand pillar at the base is: '1828'.
