Ancona (1893); Cargo vessel; Bermuda (1893); Cargo vessel

Scale: 1:48. A model of the starboard side of the 4-masted barques Ancona (1893) and Bermuda (1893) made entirely in wood with metal fittings. The model is carved from wood, the lower half of which is laminated revealing different cross-grains, the effect simulating stylised planking. The hull below the waterline is varnished or polished, and painted black above. There is one continuous turtle deck. Deck fittings include four truncated masts, three cargo hatches, a deck house, an enclosed wheel house at the stern, and a railing with wooden hand rail running the entire length of the deck. The model is displayed in its original mahogany-framed display case, glazed at the front, and with column supports. The backboard is veneered in mahogany below the waterline and bird's eye maple above. On plaque inside case "Awning decked sailing vessels "Ancona" and "Bermuda" Built by Russell & Co., Port Glasgow and Greenock Reg. Dim. 280 x 45 x 23 x 30 to A.D. D.W.4100 Tons, Fitted with Midship Water-Ballast Tanks for 1400 Tons".
