Port Elgin (1893); Cargo vessel

Scale: 1: 48. A half block model of Port Elgin (1893) made largely of wood with metal, silver, and gold plated fittings. The hull, which is made in bread and butter fashion, is finished in natural varnished wood below the waterline and has black topsides to deck level with a wooden gunwale capping. The clipper shaped bow is complete with an ornately carved female figurehead finished in natural varnished wood and a trailboard with decoration finished in gold. The forecastle and poop deck show individual planks lined in black ink whilst the main deck is finished in a dark mahogany veneer. The forecastle deck is complete with a shortened bowsprit projecting over the figurehead, two sets of bollards, a fairlead, a cathead, a capstan, a small rectangular skylight, and a circular navigation lantern. The whole deck is surrounded by a guardrail with silver plated stanchions. The main deck is complete with three stump masts finished in natural varnished wood, a large rectangular deckhouse with panels, doors, and portholes marked in black ink. Alongside the deckhouse is a small lifeboat with a square transom stern mounted in chocks on raised skids, all of which are finished in a natural varnished wood. Between the foremast and mizzen mast is a double ended lifeboat mounted on chocks on raised skids with a pair of silver plated davits rigged inboard. The raised boat deck is connected by a gangway leading aft to the poop deck and is surrounded by a guardrail mounted on silver plated stanchions. The poop deck is fitted with a small rectangular charthouse, a raised and rounded skylight fitted with seats either sides, bollards, and fairleads, all of which are surrounded by a guardrail mounted on silver plated stanchions and finished with a wooden capping. There is a large silver plated wheel mounted on a rectangular steering box with raised gratings on either side and a single binnacle fitted just forward of the steering position. The whole model is mounted to a wooden backboard with a birds eye maple panel to the waterline and a darker wood veneer below the waterline. There is a rectangular wooden plaque at the bow on which is inscribed: 'Ship Port Elgin Reg Dim 260' 0" x 38' 2" x 22' 9" owners Messrs Crawford & Rowat Glasgow. Built by Russell & Co (W.T. Lithgow Sole Partner) Port-Glasgow & Greenock'.
