HMS Whiting (1896); Warship; Destroyer, Torpedo boat
Scale: 1:48. Builder's full hull model of the torpedo-boat destroyer HMS 'Whiting' (1896). The model is decked, equipped and rigged. Built at Jarrow-on-Tyne by Palmers Shipbuilding & Iron Co. Ltd., ‘Whiting’ measured 215 feet in length by 21 feet in the beam.
Following the success of the first of its type, the ‘Havock’ (1893), large numbers of torpedo-boat destroyers were built, a comparatively free hand being allowed in the designs coming from private shipyards. As a result two classes were built, the first in 1894–95 with a speed of 27 knots. The second class, to which ‘Whiting’ belonged, was built in 1896 and claimed 30 knots, although such a speed would only have been achievable in the calmest of conditions.
In 1900 ‘Whiting’ was in China as a tender to ‘Glory’. In June of that year along with the torpedo boat ‘Fame’, she captured four Chinese destroyers at Taku. In 1914–17 she was stationed at Hong Kong and was broken up in China in 1919.
