Karrakatta (1897); Cargo vessel
Scale: 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of the 'Karrakatta' (1897), an Australian coasting general cargo ship. Built in the builder’s style, the model is decked, fully equipped and rigged. The hull is inscribed with ‘Karrakatta’ on port and starboard bows and ‘Karrakatta Fremantle’ on stern counter. The masts are rigged with a number of derricks for the rapid loading and unloading of cargo in the smaller coastal ports.
Built by John Scott & Company, Kinghorn, Fife, for the West Australian Steam Navigation Company, the ‘Karrakatta’ measured 300 feet in length by 42 feet in the beam with a tonnage of 2091 gross. It was powered by a triple-expansion steam engine of 251 nominal horsepower and capable of a service speed of 11 knots. Vessels of this type were designed for inshore navigation carrying passengers and general cargo between the Australian ports. The ‘Karrakatta’ was wrecked on a rock pinnacle off Cape Leveque, north-west Australia, whilst on a voyage from Freemantle to Singapore on 26 March 1901.
