SS Lovaine (1898); Cargo vessel
Scale: 1:48. A half block model of SS Lovaine (1898) made largely of wood with metal and silver plated fittings. The hull, which is made in bread and butter fashion, is finished in natural varnished wood below the waterline with black topsides to deck level and a wooden gunwale capping below which are 18 circular portholes and nine scuttle ports. The forecastle, poop, and bridge decks show individual planking lined in black ink whilst the main deck shows riveted plate construction. The forecastle is fitted with an anchor davit, a hand operated windlass, bollards, fairleads, and a ventilator cowling. Either side of the foremast are two rectangular cargo hatches with the boards inked in, together with two steam operated winches. The main superstructure amidships consists of a bridge, and a chart house and is fitted with a binnacle and ventilator cowling together with a small white transom sterned boat on chocks rigged on a pair of davits. Between the bridge accommodation and the boat deck is a single reduced black funnel in front of which is a steam powered cargo winch. Just aft of the funnel is a boat deck with a white double ended lifeboat on chocks and rigged on a pair of davits. Either side of the mizzen mast are two rectangular cargo hatches with the boards inked in, together with two steam operated winches. The poop deck is fitted with bollards and fairleads, all of which are surrounded by a guardrail mounted on silver plated stanchions. There is a large silver plated wheel mounted on a rectangular box with raised gratings (missing) on either side and a single binnacle fitted just forward of the steering position. The whole model is mounted on a backboard, the top section being a rear silvered mirror (cracked at the stern) and the bottom section below the waterline a polished mahogany. The whole model is mounted in a glazed mahogany case with angled mirrors at either side. There are two ivory plaques fixed to the backboard at the bow and stern inscribed: 'SS Lovaine. Built for Henry Scholefield & Son Newcastle on Tyne by Wood, Skinner & Co Ltd Iron and steel Shipbuilders Bill Quay' and 'SS Lovaine, PRINCIPAL DIMENSIONS.
