Convoy (1900); Cargo vessel; Barge; Coaster
Scale: not calculated. The model depicts the barge ‘Convoy’ (1900), originally built as a topsail coaster by G. & T. Smith of Rye, Sussex, after her conversion to power in 1944. This well-known sailing barge was only finally broken up in 2004, which gives the model an added significance. It is a big, heavy, unrefined, and robust item that manages to capture some of the qualities that the actual barge would have had. Some of the hatch covers from the two cavernous holds have been depicted removed and stacked up. The cabin at the stern has been made from metal plate and one wonders, from its overall weight and solidity, whether it was originally made as a pond model or working toy. The rudder has, at some time, been connected to wires running along the aft-part of the deck before disappearing into the hold directly underneath the cabin, now inaccessible.
