Motoketch (1910); Cargo vessel; Ketch
Scale: 1:48. A waterline model of the 'Motoketch' (1910), an auxiliary sailing vessel. Constructed with plank on a solid block hull and overlaid with simulated riveted iron plates, the model is decked, fully equipped and rigged, with sails furled. The hull is inscribed with ‘The Motoketch’ on port and starboard bows and ‘The Motoketch London’ on stern. It was built at Millwall, London and measured 78 feet in length by 20 feet in the beam and a tonnage of 109 gross.
As engines became more powerful and reliable, the advantage of carrying sails became less apparent since the upkeep of the sails and gear cost more than their earning power. As a result, the design of motor sailing vessels in Britain did not develop beyond that which is illustrated by this model.
