SS Dorie (1911); Cargo vessel
Scale: 1:48. A half block model of SS Dorie (1911) made largely of wood with metal and silver plated fittings. The hull is painted pink below the waterline with black topsides to deck level and a wooden gunwale capping, below which are seven circular portholes and nine scuttle ports. The forecastle and bridge decks show individual planking lined in black ink while the main and poop deck are finished in a dark grey colour. The forecastle is fitted with an hand operated windlass, bollards, fairleads, three ventilator cowlings, two hand operated drums with wire wound round them. Either side of the foremast are two rectangular cargo hatches with the boards inked in, together with two steam operated winches and two ventilator cowlings. The main superstructure amidships consists of a bridge, and a chart house and is fitted with a binnacle, steering wheel, and two engine room telegraphs together with a small white transom sterned boat on chocks rigged on a pair of davits. Between the bridge accommodation and the boat deck is a single reduced black funnel in front of which is a steam powered cargo winch, a cargo derrick, three ventilator cowlings, and a cargo hatch with boards inked in. Just aft of the funnel is a boat deck with a white double ended lifeboat on chocks and rigged on a pair of davits. The foremast and mizzen mast are both rigged with a pair of derricks. Either side of the mizzen mast are two rectangular cargo hatches with the boards inked in, together with two steam operated winches. The poop deck is fitted with bollards and fairleads, all of which are surrounded by a guardrail mounted on silver plated stanchions. There is a large silver plated wheel complete with worming gear, a quadrant, and a single binnacle fitted just forward of the steering position. Just forward of the poop deck is a single mast with a derrick operated by a steam windlass which serves a small rectangular cargo hatch with boards inked in. The whole model is mounted on a rear silvered mirror (cracked at the stern) in a glazed mahogany case. There are two plaques and the one inside the case reads: 'Dorie Length B.P. 343' 0" Beam Extreme 49' 0" Depth Moulded 24' 4" Engines by Blair & Company Ltd Cylinders 24" 40" 65" x 42" Built by Richardson, Duck & Company 1911 No.615 Stockton-On-Tees'. The long metal plaque on the outside of case reads: 'Dorie Steamship Co Ltd London. Owners SS Dorie. Richardson Duck and Co. Stockton on Tees. Shipbuilders'.
