HMS Wolverine (1919); Warship; Destroyer

Scale 1:48. A contemporary full hull model of HMS ‘Wolverine’ (1919) a modified ‘W’-class destroyer. The model is decked and fully rigged and is complete with its original display case. Built by J. S. White & Co., Cowes, Isle of Wight, it measured 312 feet in length by 29 feet in the beam and a displacement tonnage of 1120. It was armed with four 4.7-inch guns and six 21-inch torpedo tubes, and was powered by twin steam turbines with a top speed of 34 knots or a radius of action 3,210 miles at 15 knots.

By the time this class was laid down in October 1918, the ‘Wolverine’ was too late for the First World War and was coming to the end of its career at the outbreak of war in 1939. However, these vessels carried out valuable work on escort duty in the Battle of the Atlantic. Together with the corvettes HMS ‘Arbutus’ and HMS ‘Camellia’, she sank the ‘U-70’ and ‘U-47’ on 17 March 1941, whilst escorting a convoy. ‘U-47’ was commanded by the German U-boat ace Gunter Prien, of Scapa Flow fame. HMS ‘Wolverine’ was eventually scrapped at Troon in January 1946.
