Silver Fir (1924); Cargo vessel

Scale 1:96 A contemporary full hull model of the MV ‘Silver Fir’ (1924), a tramp steamer. Constructed in the builder’s style, the model is decked, fully equipped and rigged and is complete with its original display case. The hull is inscribed with ‘Silver Fir’ on the port and starboard bows, and ‘Silver Fir London’ on the stern.

There are two plaques inscribed ‘Motorships Silver Elm, Silver Fir & Silver Cedar built for Messrs St Helens & Silver Cedar shipping companies. Messrs Stanley & John Thompson Ltd managers, London. By William Doxford & Sons Ltd, Shipbuilders and Engineers, Sunderland and length B.P 375’-0” Breadth extreme 52’-6” Depth to upper deck 36’-3 ¾” Draught mean 25’ 1 1/8” Machinery-single screw Doxford opposed piston oil engine 3 cylinder 540mm 1080mm x 2 Deadweight 8075 tons’.

These ships were one of a series of five standard designs of motorships operated as tramps, carrying a variety of cargo between ports throughout the world. On 16 March 1941, the ‘Silver Fir’ was sunk by the German raider ‘Gneisenau’ in the mid-North Atlantic.
