Teakwood (1927); Cargo vessel

Scale: 1:48. A half block model of Teakwood (1927), an oil tanker made entirely in wood with metal fittings. The hull is painted a flesh colour below the waterline and mid grey above with 12 circular portholes and ten scuttle ports. Apart from the bridge deck and forecastle, all the remaining decks are painted a mid grey colour including the access hatches. The forecastle is finished in natural varnished wood with individual planks lined in black ink and is surrounded by guardrails on stanchions. There is a large steam powered anchor winch and six ventilator cowlings mounted on deck. The foremast is fitted with two derricks, all of which have been cut down, and on deck is a small steam powered winch. There is a central gangway running from the forecastle to the bridge and to the aft accommodation, finished in natural wood with guardrails running its entire length. The central bridge accommodation is fitted with engine room telegraphs, a binnacle, ventilator cowlings, and a small white transom sterned boat on chocks rigged on a pair of davits. On the main deck either side of the bridge are a total of 15 access hatches to the cargo space all of which are surrounded by individual guardrails. The accommodation at the stern is complete with a boat deck either side of a light brown coloured funnel which has been cut down, and a double ended white lifeboat on chocks rigged on a pair of davits. Other fittings include three ventilator cowlings with their hoods painted red internally, a rectangular skylight, a steam powered winch and emergency steering wheel, and a binnacle. There is a companionway rigged over the side just forward of the aft accommodation block. The whole model is mounted on a surface silvered mirror with angled mirrors either end of the glazed mahogany display case. The model is further supported by two turned bronze coloured pillars just inboard of the bilge keel on the underside of the hull. There is an ivory plaque on the baseboard which reads: 'Steel Screw Petroleum Steamer "Teakwood" built by Sir W G Armstrong, Whitworth & Co Ltd Newcastle-on-Tyne for the Teakwood Steam Ship Co Ltd 1927'.
