Grom (1936); Warship; Destroyer (Polish)

Scale: 1:50. A model of the highest quality, no less than what one would expect from the modelmakers at J. Samuel White’s shipyard at Cowes, Isle of Wight, where the actual vessel was designed and built. The mass of intricately made silver-plated fittings look very effective against the dark grey hull. The model still retains its original case and builder’s information plaque.

The yard also built ‘Grom’s’ (1936) sister ship ‘Blyskawica’, their names meaning ‘thunderbolt’ and ‘lightning’ respectively, and they were advanced vessels for their type. Their features included a specially strengthened bow for navigation in the ice, and their Parsons geared turbines gave them a cruising speed of 39 knots. Together with other units of the Polish Navy, ‘Grom’ and ‘Blyskawica’ escaped to Britain when Poland was invaded in 1939. The ‘Grom’ was sunk on 3 May by bombs while covering the evacuation of Norway. One officer and 60 ratings were killed from her complement of 200.
