HMS Formidable (1939); Warship; Aircraft carrier
Scale: Unknown. A waterline model of the aircraft carrier HMS Formidable (1939) made entirely in wood with metal and organic material fittings and painted in realistic colours. The hull, deck and superstructure is painted a uniform grey. The vessel is depicted underway in a realistically painted and modelled sea. Hull features include overhanging flight deck, hanger bays for amphibious landing and other craft around the midship section, aircraft hanger deck vents at the bow and stern and small armament mounted onto projecting sections. The superstructure is positioned on the starboard side, is elongated in shape and accommodates the single funnel and two small communications masts, the rearmost one flying a white ensign. Four aircraft are depicted on the flight deck. The model is mounted in a scenic plaster sea and displayed in a glazed wooden table-top case. Inscribed on a label on the model is ‘Charles Hampshire MIMC MIEC FRSA (MIR..(?))’ and on a plaque ‘HMS Formidable" by Charles Hampshire FRSA’.
