Engadine (1940); Service vessel; Tug
Scale 1:24. Builder's full hull model of the 'Engadine' (1940), a craft motor tug. Model is decked and equipped and hull is inscribed ‘Engadine’ on port and starboard bows, with ‘Engadine London’ on the stern counter. The Initials ‘JPS’ are flown on the house flag, and painted on the funnel and lifebelts. Built by James Pollock, Faversham, Kent, the ‘Engadine’ measured 50 feet in length by 13 feet in the beam and had a gross tonnage of 68.
Powered by a single-screw marine diesel engine capable of 8 knots, these craft were principally employed in towing lighters, barges and craft that lacked their own power. Tugs of this type were powered either by diesel or steam and performed a whole variety of work by keeping barges, dock and river plant moving and were available anywhere anytime. However, tugs of this size were unable to handle large vessels since they lacked the necessary weight and power.
