HMS Graph (1940); Fighting vessel; Submarine

Scale: 1:94. This submarine has a short, but interesting, history. ‘U-570’ was built by Blohm & Voss and launched on 20 March 1941. It was captured by British forces on 27 August 1941 in the Atlantic, south of Iceland, after being damaged by a Hudson aircraft. It was then towed to Thorlakshofn and salvaged. The submarine was commissioned into the Royal Navy as HMS ‘Graph’ a couple of weeks later on 19 September 1941. The following year, while on patrol in the Bay of Biscay, it intercepted and fired four torpedoes at ‘U-333’ but failed to damage the enemy submarine. ‘Graph’ was decommissioned from active service in February 1944. It was lost the following month when it ran aground on the west coast of the Isle of Islay, Scotland.

The reason why the model was made is not known but it appears to have been a presentation piece. Almost entirely stripped of detail, its slim, streamlined, sculptural form can be appreciated. It has been stylishly mounted on a polished mahogany base with bun feet, and comes with a bespoke fitted wooden case.
